What is RIASEC and how is it used in Edge Factor?
Learn how Edge Factor uses the RIASEC framework to help students explore careers that align with their personality.
This article explains the six RIASEC types, how the Career Assessment works, and how personalized results shape the Career Journey.
What is RIASEC?
RIASEC is a vocational theory developed by John Holland. It organizes personalities into six types:
Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional.
The theory suggests that people are more likely to thrive in careers that match their personality traits, leading to greater job satisfaction and success.
The Six RIASEC Types
Type | Description |
---|---|
Realistic (R) | The Doers – Prefer hands-on tasks, tools, and working outdoors. Like building and fixing. |
Investigative (I) | The Thinkers – Curious and analytical. Enjoy solving problems and exploring ideas. |
Artistic (A) | The Creators – Imaginative. Like art, writing, music, and unstructured activities. |
Social (S) | The Helpers – Empathetic and cooperative. Prefer working with and helping others. |
Enterprising (E) | The Persuaders – Natural leaders. Enjoy leading, selling, and influencing people. |
Conventional (C) | The Organizers – Detail-oriented. Like working with data, systems, and structure. |
How RIASEC Works at Edge Factor
Edge Factor uses the RIASEC model to power the Career Assessment Quiz, which is the first stop on every student’s Career Journey Page (grades 6–12).
Here’s how it works:
-
Career Assessment Quiz
Students answer questions about their interests and strengths to discover their top 3 RIASEC types. -
Holland Code (3-Letter Personality Code)
Results form a three-letter code (e.g., SIA) representing a student’s personality and career fit. -
Personalized Career Journey
Based on the Holland Code, students are shown:-
Real people who overcame challenges in careers that match their profile
-
Industries aligned to their interests
-
Specific jobs, companies, tools, and skills that are relevant to them
-
Safety practices, soft skills, and career-readiness tips
-
Financial literacy lessons, resume writing, and interview prep in older grades
-
